Inauguration Event: Dispelling Myths of Language Acquisition
As part of the Inauguration of Roberta (Bobbi) Cordano as 11th President of Gallaudet University, we are excited to open an online discussion on a topic critical to the future of children who are deaf and hard of hearing… The urgency of providing each child who is deaf or hard of hearing, full and early access to language through bilingual exposure to American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
President Cordano started this discussion last spring, sharing an evidence based paper dispelling the myths of language acquisition for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. This paper called for the use of proven, peer-reviewed and published scientific research and data in guiding early intervention practices. President Cordano, now partners with Ron Stern, Vice President of the Clerc Center for a webcast to share their mutual passion on this topic, with a call for stakeholders to explore the importance of dramatically changing existing early language acquisition policies and practices in our country.
