If you visit science teacher Emily Schreiner’s classroom, the hallways of the science department, or a student event at MSSD, chances are you will see her with students or cheering them on. This genuine connection with MSSD students combined with her passion for teaching science has brought Emily national recognition as one of Sorenson VRS’s Top Ten Teachers for 2017.

“Emily is well-liked and respected among the students. During her classes, she sets high expectations and doesn’t allow her students to get away with doing less than their best,” said MSSD Principal Mindi Failing. “She is an exemplary teacher.”

The 10 honorees were chosen by an academic panel and were announced to the public on April 13, 2017 on the SVRS website and social media.

Emily teaches Physics, AP Biology, and Human Anatomy, and Physiology. A fixture in MSSD academics, Emily is the lead teacher of the Science Department and a member of the School Improvement Plan team. Emily also mentors new science teachers, coordinates meetings within the science department, and greets families when they visit the science department during school open house events.

The list doesn’t stop there. Emily annually coordinates a trip for select students to the Space Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Huntsville, Alabama; oversees compliance with the chemical safety protocol, for which there has been zero incidents on her watch; and is into her fourth year as class sponsor for the Class of 2017.

“Her students and the Clerc Center are fortunate to have Emily teaching at MSSD. She is dedicated and outstanding at what she does, and she truly creates an impact in the lives of her students,” said Marianne Belsky, interim chief academic officer at the Clerc Center.

“Sorenson Communications appreciates the hard work and dedication of outstanding teachers in schools for the Deaf who go above and beyond to enhance the lives of Deaf children,” said SVRS Public Relations Manager Dana Robinson in an acknowledgment email. In honoring Emily, SVRS will award MSSD with $1,000 toward school classrooms or programs.

The MSSD community and the Clerc Center congratulate Emily Schreiner on this well-deserved honor!
